Honda has confirmed pricing and specifications for its eagerly anticipated Super-N compact electric car, with prices starting from a keen £18,995.
Inspired by the cult 1980s City Turbo II, the new Super-N aims to inject a dose of character and driving enjoyment into the increasingly crowded small EV market. While many city-focused electric cars place efficiency above all else, Honda is hoping its latest model will stand out by offering a more entertaining experience behind the wheel.
Retro inspiration, modern technology
Built on the lightweight platform of Honda’s hugely successful N-Series kei cars sold in Japan, the Super-N combines retro-inspired styling with modern electric technology.
Its boxy proportions, wide stance, flared wheelarches and distinctive aero detailing are clear nods to the iconic City Turbo II. Inside, the theme continues with blue accents, supportive sports-style seats and ambient lighting that changes colour when the car’s performance-focused BOOST Mode is activated.
The standout feature is undoubtedly that BOOST Mode itself. At the press of a button, power output from the compact electric e-Axle increases from 47kW to 70kW, cutting the 0-62mph sprint from a leisurely 14.5 seconds to a far more respectable 10.0 seconds.
Honda has also added a simulated seven-speed transmission and Active Sound Control system that generates an engine-like soundtrack. While some drivers may question whether fake gearshifts and artificial engine noise are necessary in an EV, Honda believes they add an extra layer of engagement and emotional appeal.
Lightweight approach
Unlike many modern electric vehicles that carry significant weight due to large battery packs, the Super-N weighs just 1,097kg thanks to its compact 29.6kWh lithium-ion battery.
That helps deliver the nimble handling Honda is targeting, aided by uprated suspension and chassis settings developed and fine-tuned on British roads.
Range figures are naturally more modest than larger electric cars. The official WLTP combined range stands at 128 miles, although Honda claims urban drivers could achieve up to 199 miles in city conditions where the Super-N is likely to spend most of its time.
Charging is relatively straightforward too, with a 50kW DC charger capable of replenishing the battery from low charge to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.
Surprisingly practical
Despite measuring just 3.6 metres long, the Super-N offers a cleverly packaged cabin designed to maximise interior space.
Honda says four adults can travel comfortably, while its trademark Magic Seats system allows multiple seating and load configurations. Boot space ranges from 162 litres with all seats in place to an impressive 967 litres when the rear seats are folded.
Premium specification
Honda is keeping things simple by offering a generous standard specification. Buyers get a Bose eight-speaker sound system with subwoofer, ambient lighting, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, plus the full suite of Honda SENSING safety and driver assistance technologies.
A range of colour choices will also be available, including the eye-catching Boost Violet Pearl finish, alongside optional graphic packs and two-tone paint combinations.
Prices
The Honda Super-N is available to order now, with prices starting from £18,995. Given its unique character, generous equipment levels and affordable entry point, it could prove an appealing option for buyers seeking a fun, distinctive electric city car.
