CUPRA has opened UK order books for its most extreme Formentor yet, and it’s not just another fast SUV. The VZ5 arrives in strictly limited numbers, with just 4,000 examples available worldwide, giving it an added layer of exclusivity in an increasingly crowded performance crossover market.
First revealed last year, this range-topping model marks the return of an engine configuration enthusiasts have long missed. Under the bonnet sits a 2.5-litre five-cylinder TSI unit pushing out 385bhp, making it comfortably the most powerful Formentor to date.
Five-cylinder fireworks
The headline figures are compelling, but there’s more to the VZ5 than raw output. Power is sent through a seven-speed DSG gearbox and CUPRA’s all-wheel-drive system, bolstered by torque splitter technology to help distribute power more precisely across the rear axle.
In theory, that should translate to sharper handling and a more engaging drive than the standard car. Whether it fully delivers on that promise remains to be seen, but the ingredients are certainly there for something pretty special.
Muscular looks, premium feel
Visually, the VZ5 doesn’t try to hide its intent. A more aggressive front bumper, wider arches and a reworked rear diffuser give it a squat, purposeful stance. Copper accents remain a CUPRA signature, while a choice of matt and metallic finishes adds a premium edge.
Inside, it’s a familiar but still appealing environment. Ambient lighting, CUPRA detailing and supportive CUPBucket seats reinforce the sporting feel, although the overall layout won’t be a huge departure for existing Formentor owners.
Special, but at a cost
Of course, exclusivity and performance rarely come cheap. The Formentor VZ5 is priced from £64,495 on the road, placing it firmly in premium territory and up against some serious rivals.
For that money, buyers get standout performance and rarity, but questions remain over whether it offers enough extra sparkle over less powerful (and more affordable) alternatives.
Still, for those drawn to its distinctive five-cylinder soundtrack and limited-run appeal, the VZ5 could prove hard to resist when it lands on UK roads later this year.
