Enterprise NI Celebrates 40 Years Of Local Enterprise Agencies

Local Enterprise Agencies (LEAs) across Belfast and Lisburn are being celebrated this February as part of Enterprise NI’s LEA Spotlight, recognising a landmark 40 years of enterprise agencies working at the heart of local communities to support entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth.

The spotlight highlights the collective impact of six Local Enterprise Agencies operating across the Belfast City and Lisburn City and Castlereagh council areas: East Belfast Enterprise, The Ortus Group, Work West Enterprise Agency, North City Business Centre, Lisburn Enterprise Organisation and Inspire Business Centre.

For four decades, Local Enterprise Agencies have played a vital role in supporting start-ups and micro enterprises by providing accessible property solutions, tailored business support programmes, and practical services that help local people turn ideas into sustainable businesses. Their work continues to enrich local communities by creating jobs, strengthening local economies and fostering a culture of enterprise across Northern Ireland.

Through their close connections with local people, LEAs act as a gateway to the resources, tools and guidance needed to start and grow a business. This ensures more individuals are empowered to participate in enterprise and contribute to the growth of both local economies and the wider Northern Ireland economy.

Michael McQuillan, Chief Executive, Enterprise NI, said:

“For 40 years, Local Enterprise Agencies have been at the frontline of enterprise development in Northern Ireland. The agencies across Belfast and Lisburn demonstrate the power of local delivery, combining deep community knowledge with practical support to help businesses start, survive and grow. Their collective impact on local communities and the economy is significant, and this spotlight is an opportunity to recognise the vital role they continue to play.

“In today’s challenging economic environment, we know entrepreneurs face pressures from rising costs, skills gaps and market uncertainty. That’s why accessible, tailored support, from flexible property solutions to expert advice and development programmes, remains essential for those starting and scaling enterprises. These agencies provide that support every day, ensuring more people can take the leap into entrepreneurship with confidence.

“Enterprise and entrepreneurship are the lifeblood of vibrant, resilient communities. By connecting local people with the right resources, champions and tools, our LEAs help unlock potential and inspire growth. For our LEAs to be celebrating 40 years of doing so is proof positive of the demand for their services and the continuing entrepreneurial appetite that exists across Northern Ireland. Strong collaboration between councils, government partners, business networks and LEAs will continue to be crucial in shaping an enterprise ecosystem that supports both local and regional prosperity.”

The LEA Spotlight will continue to celebrate the contribution of Local Enterprise Agencies across Northern Ireland, showcasing their role in supporting entrepreneurs, strengthening communities and driving inclusive economic growth.
