Galway Science & Technology Festival has launched its 2026 programme of events, celebrating its 29th year of inspiring curiosity, discovery and innovation. This year’s theme, ‘Water – From Molecule to Ocean’, will feature alongside a wide range of science and technology activities, supported by main sponsor Medtronic and lead education sponsor University of Galway.
Kenny Deery, Chair of the Festival Board, highlighted the importance of the Festival in inspiring future generations and connecting young people with the world of science and technology. Special guest speaker Joanna Donnelly, Meteorologist shared insight into the super El Nino phenomenon happening this year.
“Galway Science & Technology Festival has played an important role in inspiring young minds for almost three decades. At a time when science and technology are shaping our world at an extraordinary pace, encouraging curiosity and nurturing future talent has never been more important. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and partners, whose continued support enables us to make the Family Day Exhibition free and accessible to everyone. Their commitment is an investment in the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.”
The Festival’s hugely popular Family Day Exhibition takes place on Sunday 8 November at the University of Galway, from 10am to 5pm. Families can enjoy an exciting range of free interactive exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities, with something to capture the imagination of every age group. Free tickets for selected shows and workshops will be released online on Saturday 31 October at 9am.
Anne Murray, Festival Manager, encouraged everyone to get involved and embrace the spirit of discovery. “Science is all around us, in everything we do, and the Festival is a wonderful opportunity to explore it together. We want to encourage everyone, young and old, to be curious, ask questions, try something new and discover more about the world around us. You don’t need to be a scientist to enjoy science! Whether you’re fascinated by technology, love experimenting or simply want a fun and inspiring family day out, there is something for everyone.”
On Friday 13 November, Dexcom Stadium will host ‘Women Shaping the Future in STEM’, in association with Network Ireland, alongside ‘Girls in STEM – Inspiring the Next Generation of Visionaries’. These events will celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while highlighting the opportunities available to the next generation. Hearing directly from successful women working in STEM is particularly important for young girls, helping them see what is possible, challenge stereotypes and recognise that they too can shape the future through science and technology.
Another important event takes place at the University of Galway on Thursday 12 November, when the National Youth Climate Assembly, spearheaded by Brendan Smith, will bring young voices together to explore climate challenges and the role of young people in shaping a more sustainable future.
Now in its 29th year, Galway Science & Technology Festival continues to bring science to life for families, schools and communities across the region. The Family Day Exhibition offers a unique opportunity to meet scientists and engineers, explore fascinating technologies, take part in hands-on activities and discover how science influences our everyday lives. With free admission and something to inspire every generation, families are encouraged to come along, get involved and enjoy a day of discovery together.
