The grants, worth £20,000 each, have been awarded to social enterprises to develop projects that create a direct social impact, with projects pivoting their activities or adapting the way they work in light of Covid-19.

Goliath Trust addresses educational under-achievement in primary schools in disadvantaged areas of Belfast most severely impacted by the 30 years of the Troubles, through school attendance schemes and a digital learning hub. The S&CC grant funding will enable the organisation to purchase the ICT programmes they use, as well as physical resources. It will also help fund an ICT Technician and admin support to help extend their Digital Learning Hub programme.

Megan Peat, CEO of Social & Community Capital, said: “The quality of the applications to our anniversary grants programme was amazing; there were so many projects that we could have supported. With help and assistance from our volunteers, Goliath Trust was chosen as one of the worthy winners. I look forward to working them to support their project over the next 18 months.”

Chair of Goliath Trust, Dr Alasdair McDonnell, said: “This award is most welcome. It will be used to boost teacher computer skills which, ultimately, will lead to better pupil outcomes in the classroom. We tackle educational under-achievement in areas blighted by paramilitarism and our aim is to re-build confidence by providing programmes not covered by Government funding.”

Mark Crimmins, Head of Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland, said: “Ulster Bank is strongly focused on supporting the communities in which it operates and we are very pleased to enable Goliath Trust to avail of additional funding that it can put to good use making a positive impact locally.”
