SuperValu, Centra and MACE transport lorries have been decked out with colourful messages paying tribute to frontline workers and calling on people to ‘stay safe.’ The 70 lorry fleet, manned by drivers who are themselves part of the frontline effort to keep delivering fresh food and essentials moving to local stores, will help spread this positive message as they travel delivering vital food supplies to stores across Northern Ireland.

The balloon shaped vinyl stickers, which include a rainbow and the message ‘Thank you NHS and all frontline workers’, alongside a call to ‘Stay Safe’ were produced by local Belfast company, Sign Link.

SuperValu and Centra are also putting their support behind a fundraising initiative by their long-standing charity partner Action Cancer which is calling on people to take part in the 2.6 fundraising challenge this Sunday 26th April.

Action Cancer hopes to raise thousands via the 2.6 Challenge, which has been created to replace the Virgin Money Marathon, which would have been the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event this Sunday. The challenge encourages people to take on a fundraising challenge at home. You don’t need to be a marathon runner to take part; the idea is that people take on a fundraising challenge based around the numbers 2 and 6. There are no rules except that government guidelines about exercising safely and maintaining social distancing at this time must be followed.

With fundraising events cancelled and Action Cancer retail shops closed, the charity has seen a substantial drop in income as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic and needs to raise vital funds, so the charity it can provide life-saving cancer prevention, detection and support services to those most in need as soon as services can get back up and running.

Commenting on the initiatives, Desi Derby, Marketing Director for SuperValu, Centra and MACE in NI said: “We’re very proud of the role our drivers and staff in warehouses and stores are playing as part of the frontline effort in this crisis and it’s great to visualise this sense of pride with these important words of thanks now visible on all our lorries as they keep the supply chain moving across Northern Ireland.

“We are also proud to get behind the 2.6 Challenge to help raise vital funds for Action Cancer. In normal circumstances, this month, hundreds of runners would have taken part in the first of our Centra Run Together 5K running events, in aid of Action Cancer. We’re encouraging those people, as well as our staff and customers across all of our Centra and SuperValu stores to get up and running, by taking part in the 2.6 Challenge this Sunday to support Action Cancer.”

To get involved, go to www.twopointsixchallenge.co.uk and hit the ‘fundraise now’ button, select Action Cancer as your chosen charity and ask your family and friends to sponsor you or make a donation.
