The 2020 search for Northern Ireland’s top receptionists has been launched by the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation (NIHF). The competition which has run for nearly two decades has three categories to acknowledge established teams, individuals and new providers.

A mystery shopping approach is used to determine the NIHF ‘Hotel Reception Team of the Year’ category, while the individual ‘Hotel Receptionist of the Year’ and ‘Most Promising Hotel Receptionist of the Year’ (for those with under one year’s experience) categories are identified through a competency-based process.

NIHF President Stephen Meldrum said:

“The Hotel Receptionist of the Year competition demonstrates the industry’s commitment to celebrating people within hotels and it is one of the highlights of the NIHF calendar. The standard of entrants is exceptionally high with individuals’ professionalism and passion coming to the fore. Reception is an integral part of any hotel operation and it is an interesting role that offers flexibility, career progression and customer interaction.”

Stephen continues: “It is important that we recognise those who provide exceptional service and reward them for the positive contribution that they make to the hotel sector. We have received invaluable support from industry partners including Tourism Northern Ireland, Avvio, Insight6, Net Affinity and Right Revenue, and this year Derry City and Strabane District Council has welcomed the competition. We are delighted to be staging the awards dinner in Derry-Londonderry on the 12th May 2020 in the Waterfoot Hotel.”

The assessment day to find this year’s best in class takes place on Tuesday 7th April in the Clayton Hotel, Belfast. The selection process is an arduous one testing the entrants’ communication, leadership and initiative skills with a series of bespoke tasks created by Life Adventure Company.
