Henderson Wholesale will stand shoulder to shoulder with local suppliers in the wake of MPs rejection of an amendment to the Agriculture Bill to protect welfare standards, says the director of fresh foods at the company.   The wholesaler, which supplies fresh products to over 480 SPAR, EUROSPAR, ViVO, ViVOXTRA and ViVO Essentials stores in Northern Ireland fully supports local poultry and beef sectors in their bid to reject the expected tidal wave of imported chlorinated chicken and hormone enhanced beef into the UK.

Neal Kelly, Fresh Foods Director at Henderson Wholesale says the firm has always sourced locally where possible and will not compromise its suppliers’ livelihoods and wholesale offering by stocking products that do not meet UK protection standards.

Neal said; “It is hugely disappointing that MPs rejected the amendment to the Agriculture Bill which would simply protect our farmers and agri-business sector across the UK. We share the Ulster Farmers’ Union’s disappointment with the outcome of the debate, and it is perplexing that MPs would not vote to protect our farmers and our consumers from lower than standard products such as chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef.

“Our local beef and poultry suppliers have built excellent welfare and butchery standards and we will continue to support them first and foremost. Where we must supplement any sourcing outside of the island of Ireland, we will always ensure imported product abides by EU and UK regulations.”

In May, UFU president Ivor Ferguson expressed the organisation’s disappointment with the outcome of the debate, saying; “This logic has bewildered the entire UK farming community considering how the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasised the importance of local food production and food security.”

Mr Ferguson has now commended Henderson’s commitment to local farmers; “It is extremely encouraging that one of our biggest wholesalers and retailers has promised their ongoing commitment to our agri-food sector by continuing to supply local produce to their customers. By doing so, Henderson is supporting farming families across Northern Ireland who work endlessly, producing food to some of the highest environmental, animal welfare and food production standards in the world. Our farmers efforts ensure shop shelves and butcher counters remain stocked so consumers can purchase delicious produce when they need it without the worry of how it was farmed or where it came from.

“Henderson’s commitment to supplying local produce will provide vital support to the entire Agri industry during this pandemic. The agri-food industry is a major contributor to the economy, supporting every one in eight jobs and the NI agri-food industry turns over £4.5b annually, not to mention supporting local food production is critical to safeguarding food security here in Northern Ireland. We all want to be able to purchase high-quality food when we need it, no matter what is going on in the world. Local food production is the only way we can guarantee this and emphasises the need for all Northern Ireland retailers to support local agriculture. If COVID-19 has taught us anything it’s that when times are hard, we rely on our neighbours more than ever and that includes our farmers, the primary producers. Henderson’s support will be much appreciated among the farming community.”

Henderson Wholesale currently supports farmers and producers across the island of Ireland by supplying locally produced food and homegrown brands in store.

Mr Kelly finished; “We would encourage our fellow wholesalers and retailers in Northern Ireland to never compromise quality or welfare for price to ensure our farmers are protected as the waters of trade deals are navigated, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
