With no news as yet on whether, how or even if our Executive will introduce any revenue-raising measures, the fairly pointless use of the begging bowl continues unabated this week. Apparently, we’re due some form of a budget imminently from Caoimhe Archibald but the gap between what she has to spend and what our Ministers want is nothing short of immense.

Their lack of action on reducing budgets and raising revenue continues to be indulged by both the UK government and just about everyone else.

In the past couple of days alone, we’ve listened to carefully placed stories about NI Water and the justice system here. In what it maybe reckoned was a clever piece of PR, NI Water warned us all (via BBC Radio Ulster) that tonnes of sewage was escaping into our rivers, lakes and waterways every year.

It’s not hard to visualise it. Brown slicks and floating bits of sh*** where the water should be glittering, crystal clear and inviting.

And, you’ve guessed it, the conclusion is that we’re all going to have to put up with shitty rivers and lakes unless someone stumps up the millions needed to upgrade NI Water’s systems.

If that’s not depressing enough, we also heard from the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland. In another downbeat assessment, it borrowed a well-worn phrase from health, education and infrastructure to say that our legal system was at ‘tipping point’.

And what will bring that legal system back from the brink? Yep, show them the money, honey.
