Two learners and their tutor from the Futures project, an EU PEACE IV project managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, led by Belfast Met in partnership with Start 360, NI Housing Executive and Southern Regional College, received three awards at OCN NI’s online Northern Ireland Learning Endeavour Awards 2020. The recipients of the NI Learning Endeavor Awards 2020 were Ethan Gould who was Highly Commended as Further Education Learner of the Year, and Philip Marten who also received Highly Commended in the Health & Wellbeing Learner of the Year category.


Both students recently completed their OCN NI Level 2 Personal Success and Wellbeing qualification at Belfast Met.

Principal and Chief Executive Louise Warde Hunter, Belfast Met, said,” On behalf of the College I would like congratulate Jamie, Ethan and Phil on their fantastic achievements and this important recognition of their hard work. Futures Project reflects the College’s strategy of contributing to a thriving economy while supporting the active inclusion of young people who face particular challenges or require additional support, and ensures they can access opportunities to contribute to the continued economic success and social wellbeing of the city and wider region.”

OCN NI Chief Executive Officer, Martin Flynn, said, “Despite having to create a virtual awards ceremony for our 2020 Learning Endeavour Awards due to COVID-19, this did not reduce the engagement and enthusiasm of our learners and tutors with this year’s unique event.  We are delighted that Belfast Met has been so successful this year, a true reflection of the quality of students and tutors who have helped to make the College such a success.  We join with Belfast Met’s Principal and Chief Executive Louise Warde Hunter in congratulating Ethan, Phil and Jamie and look forward to an even greater number of entries from Belfast Met for our Learning Endeavour Awards event in March 2021.”  

Futures Project Manager Jamie Maze also received Highly Commended in the Inspiring Tutor of the Year category.  Jamie is an experienced youth worker, having previously worked for the Wave Trauma Centre, Education Authority and YMCA, she also teaches modules and tutors on the Youth and Community work degree through Youthlink NI.  

Jamie Maze, Futures Project Manager at Belfast Metropolitan College confirmed, “We are thrilled to have received this recognition; Ethan and Philip are prime examples of young people’s resilience in the face of ongoing challenges and we will continue to support them to build their self-confidence and achieve their goals with both their career and in everyday life.”

Ethan, 21, who has been a peer leader on the Futures Project working on tackling mental health issue with young people aged 16-24 years, which he has continued to do online during the lockdown, as well as working part time and volunteering with his local housing association.

Ethan Gould said of receiving the award, Being Highly Commended for this award was a huge deal for me and I am incredibly proud. It makes me feel good knowing that I can achieve far more than I thought or believed I could.”

Phil, also 21, struggled with poor mental health before joining Futures, and is now a Futures ambassador using his own experience to design a resource that can help others that may find themselves struggling.
