McKeever Hotels To Bring New Cocktail Bar Experience To Armagh

McKeever Hotels have unveiled plans for The Meridian, a cocktail-led hospitality concept at Armagh City Hotel which is inspired by the city’s internationally recognised heritage in astronomy, timekeeping and navigation.

Developed as a destination venue for residents, visitors and locals, the venue takes its name from the historic Meridian Line and its connection with the Armagh Observatory, creating a distinctive meeting point that reflects the city’s unique place in science and exploration.

The new venue is designed by Drinksology, the Belfast-based brand and experience specialists renowned for developing the multi award-winning Dead Rabbit bar in New York, which has gained global recognition including being crowned the World’s Best Bar. The Drinksology team were also key players behind the Guinness Storehouse in both Dublin and London.

McKeever Hotels have also appointed Carrickfergus-based McCue Fit-Out, who have delivered bespoke projects for clients including Claridge’s Hotel, Ivy Group and Titanic Belfast.

Representing an investment of £600,000, The Meridian is the latest phase of a wider £4 million capex spend by the McKeever family, which aims to unlock Armagh City Hotel’s potential as an all-island tourist and conference destination.

The development also supports the McKeever’s ambition to create a four-star destination that has strong visitor appeal while remaining firmly rooted in the local community.

“When we bought this hotel over a year ago, we knew it had great strengths and enormous potential,” said Eddie McKeever, Managing Director of McKeever Hotels. “Our research also revealed clear demand for a premium bar which would offer a different type of experience and act as a natural draw for locals, as well as hotel guests.

“We’ve brought in the best team to deliver this important restorative project and help elevate the hotel to a new level. We want The Meridian to become one of the region’s most talked about hospitality destinations.”

With work underway and scheduled for completion early winter, The Meridian will have capacity for 120 guests. This includes The Constellation Room – a nook for premium spirit and wine tastings – and its own private dining space. There will also be a strong emphasis on supporting and stocking local brands.

In another coup, Greg Buda, former director of education for The Dead Rabbit and one of the world’s most respected hospitality educators, is developing The Meridian’s cocktail menu. The acclaimed New York venue has earned global recognition for its innovative cocktail menus and world-class drinks programme.

Alan Stewart, Head of Business Development, McCue Fit-Out said: “Having worked with McKeevers to deliver the Whiskey Cellar in The Dunadry, we’re delighted to bring the same level of craftsmanship, quality and design to The Meridian. We look forward to working with the Drinksology team to see this innovative venue come to life in the months ahead.”

Andrew O’Doherty, Architect and Experiential Designer, Drinksology added: “The Meridian has been inspired by Armagh’s long-standing connection to discovery, navigation and measurement of time.  Every element of the design has been developed to tell that story, creating a venue that feels distinctive, immersive and authentically connected to the city.

“Our vision is for The Meridian to become a place where people gather, connect and create lasting memories.”
