Professor Matthew Moran has been appointed as the Director of Queen’s Institute for Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s University Belfast.
Professor Moran joins Queen’s from King’s College London where he was Professor of International Security and Head of the Department of War Studies.
His research focuses on the social and political factors that contribute to major security-related events and he has published on issues ranging from public disorder to coercion and weapons of mass destruction. He has extensive experience of designing and delivering education and professional development programmes in these areas.
Welcoming Professor Moran, Professor Sir Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s said:“Professor Moran brings an outstanding combination of academic expertise and a commitment to understanding some of the most complex security challenges facing our world today. His appointment strengthens Queen’s international standing in this field and reflects our commitment to bringing leading scholarship to address the issues facing societies around the world.
“I warmly welcome Professor Moran to the University and look forward to seeing the Institute build on its strong foundations under his leadership, working with colleagues across Queen’s and partners to shape debate, inform policy and develop new approaches to peace, security and justice.”

Professor Moran took up the post on 1 September 2026.
