Airbus Belfast Delivers 500th Wingset For A220-300

Airbus Belfast has delivered its 500th wingset for the A220-300 programme, marking an industrial milestone amid growing demand for the aircraft type.

“We aren’t just celebrating a number; we’re celebrating an industrial achievement,” said Anthony Rouse, Airbus Belfast Head of Plant and Site. “The delivery of our 500th A220-300 wingset is a great milestone for this site – the home of A220 wings!”

The delivery comes during a period of growth for the programme signalled by the recent landmark order from Air Asia for 150 A220-300s – the largest firm order ever recorded for this aircraft type.

Airbus has also recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first A220 delivery (formerly the C Series), on June 29, 2016 to SWISS Global Airlines. Since then, more than 1,000 A220s have been ordered by 35 customers with more than 500 delivered to 25 operators worldwide.

Belfast plays a central role in the programme as the exclusive production site for the aircraft’s wings. The Airbus A220 wing is recognised for pioneering a patented Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) manufacturing process. This advanced composite construction makes the wing around 10% lighter than its traditional aluminum counterpart, resulting in reduced fuel burn and lower overall CO₂ emissions per flight. Combining the longest range, lowest fuel consumption and widest cabin in its class, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category, carrying between 100 and up to 160 passengers on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km).

In line with Airbus’ commitment to decarbonisation, the A220 can currently operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supporting the company’s target to achieve 100% SAF capability across its entire aircraft fleet by 2030.
