The global WBECS community will be addressed by a speaker from Northern Ireland for the first time, later this month. Deirdre Morrison, an applied neuroscience practitioner and development facilitator, will open the Coach Showcase strand of the World Business and Executive Coaching Summit (WBECS).

The organisation has a global membership of approximately 150,000 in 180 countries.

Applied neuroscience is a growing discipline in the coaching and development field, and it acts as a bridge between cutting-edge research, and finding useful applications for that research in day to day life.

“The human brain is a fascinating topic. We’ve all got one, but too few of us understand how they really work. We typically think of our inner world, and engage with the outer world in what approximates to two dimensions. When we tap into the information and tools being developed in applied neuroscience, we get access to a far more nuanced, multidimensional view of our actions, reactions and interactions. This, in turn, gives us a better, more informed decision making process, both personally and professionally. When we start to understand more about the incredibly complex interplay of the different aspects of the brain, it’s not even just like the move from 2-D to 3-D. This is much more like jumping from 2-D to VR.

“Using coaching to develop individuals and teams is not a new approach for businesses and leaders, but tapping into applied neuroscience is very much the ‘hot topic’ at conferences and industry events. This is no doubt in part because of the results that are being attributed to the application of neuroscience methods in fields such as sport – Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has cited neuroscience as key in his team’s successes, for example. Another aspect of applied neuroscience that people are very drawn to is enhanced effectiveness and flow states.

“People are starting to realise that understanding how their brain operates, and being able to actively shift between the various perspectives the brain offers, can give them new choices, and new ways to tap into creativity and insight, which are the lifeblood of innovation for any organisation. In addition, it paves the way for enhanced interpersonal understanding and collaboration, which is critical as we face the extensive changes the world is undergoing.

“It’s an honour to deliver a talk for this prestigious organisation. I’ll be speaking about ‘‘Marginal Losses and Psychological Negative Equity’. Despite the technical sounding title, this is a phenomenon that many face without realising, and with potentially devastating results for careers, relationships, and health.”

Details of the talk, which takes place at the end of September, will be available on Deirdre Morrison’s website, https://neurocreative.studio as soon as they are released.
