Hundreds of multicoloured plastic ducks are set to converge at South Belfast’s Old Shaw’s Bridge on Saturday 2nd April and race down the Lagan to raise funds for Mary Peters Trust athletes. The sporting charity is hoping that families, individuals, businesses and community groups will join their first ever Mini Duck Race and sponsor a chirpy ‘Hastings Hotels’ style duck for £10 helping local athletes to train, develop and be the best that they can be.

Lady Mary Peters explains:

“The idea was inspired by the heart-warming Hastings Group Christmas advert and story – The Doorman and the Duck, as well as the iconic plastic ducks found in the hotel bathrooms.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of Hastings Hotels which like me is marking a special anniversary. The Europa Hotel opened just over 50 years ago and this summer I celebrate a half century since my Olympic Gold at Munich. We’re also indebted to Belfast Activity Centre and a range of prize packages sponsored by both Hastings Hotels and Belfast Activity Centre will be presented to our ‘lucky duck’ winners.”

Donations can be made online and for £10 the Mary Peters Trust will allocate everyone a number. All sponsored ducks will be launched on the River Lagan at 12 noon on 2nd April from Old Shaw’s Bridge, Milltown Road in South Belfast. After the race is over every duck can be collected that day or from the Trust’s offices the week after.
