Ulster University has awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) to John Harkin OBE at its Derry~Londonderry campus, in recognition of his exceptional leadership, global business achievement, and sustained commitment to the North-West of Northern Ireland.
The recognition comes just weeks after the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Alchemy Technology Services, was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to economic development and entrepreneurship in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026.
John established Alchemy in 2018 to create a centre of excellence in insurance technology while driving high‑value employment in the region. The company’s growth and subsequent integration into global technology group NTT DATA have further strengthened the North‑West’s position within the international digital economy.
With more than 30 years’ experience across technology and consulting, John began his career with Peat Marwick (now KPMG), leading major transformation programmes before taking on international roles with Apple in Paris and Cupertino. He later built a global consulting career supporting complex IT delivery across major cities including New York, Sydney and San Francisco, and held senior leadership positions with organisations including DXC, PwC and KPMG.
Despite this international career, he has remained closely connected to his home city, demonstrating a strong commitment to regional growth and community development. Alongside his commercial achievements, he has supported local cultural and charitable organisations, including The Playhouse and Cancer Fund for Children.
John Harkin OBE said:
“It is a real honour to receive this recognition from Ulster University here in my home city. While my career has taken me around the world, I’ve always believed in creating opportunity at home. Whether through growing Alchemy, supporting young athletes through the Mary Peters Trust or helping bring world-class artists and creative opportunities to Derry through les Foyer des Artistes, I’ve been fortunate to work with people whose talent and ambition inspire me every day.
I’m proud to receive this honour from a university that shares that belief in people and potential. Congratulations to everyone graduating this summer. I wish you every success for the future, and I’m delighted to be joining the Ulster University Class of 2026.”
This honour acknowledges both John’s global business success and his continued investment in the economic and social future of the North‑West.
More than 5,000 students will graduate from Ulster University this summer, with ten days of celebrations taking place at ceremonies in Belfast, Coleraine & Derry~Londonderry.
