Ulster University Honour For North West 200 Driving Force

Ulster University has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) on Mervyn Whyte MBE at its Coleraine campus, recognising his outstanding contribution to motorsport.

One of the most influential figures in motorcycle road racing, Mervyn has been at the heart of the North West 200 for more than 50 years. Widely regarded as one of the world’s premier road races, the event has become Northern Ireland’s largest outdoor sporting occasion, attracting more than 100,000 visitors annually and delivering significant economic impact for the Causeway Coast and Glens.

Mervyn began his involvement with the North West 200 as a volunteer Road Marshal in 1973 after joining Coleraine District Motor Club. Over the decades, he progressed through a range of senior roles, becoming Clerk of the Course in 2001 and Event Director in 2015. Under his leadership, the event has continued to grow in scale, reputation and international reach.

Alongside his work with the North West 200, Mervyn has held key positions across the motorsport sector, including roles with the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre), the Macau Grand Prix and the British Superbike Championship. Parallel to his motorsport career, he also built a successful management career with DuPont.

Mervyn Whyte MBE said:

“I am truly honoured to receive this recognition from Ulster University. The North West 200 has always been about more than racing, it is about community, tradition and showcasing this region to the world. Over many years, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated volunteers, teams and partners whose commitment has helped the event grow and thrive. It is something the entire NorthWest can take pride in, and I am pleased to have played a part in highlighting the strengths of this region on an international stage.”

Mervyn is widely regarded as an ambassador for both the sport and Northern Ireland. He was awarded an MBE for services to the North West 200 and Motorsport in Northern Ireland and received the Freedom of the Borough of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, as well as various other awards.

This honour from Ulster University recognises his lifelong dedication to motorsport and his lasting contribution to the sporting, cultural and economic life of the Causeway Coast and beyond.

More than 5,000 students will graduate from Ulster University this summer, with ten days of celebrations taking place at ceremonies in Belfast, Coleraine & Derry~Londonderry.
