Rwanda Or Bust

We’re always complaining that there aren’t enough flights from our local airports to key European capitals, for instance, or direct ones to North America. Now it seems there won’t be any linking us with the delights of Rwanda either.

That’s thanks to a ruling by Mr. Justice Humphreys in the High Court in Belfast which declared that much of the UK’s Illegal Migration Act (also known as the Rwanda Bill) could not apply here due to rights protections built into the Windsor Framework. The judge also ruled that other sections of the Act were incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

As a ruling, it didn’t go down too well with Rishi Sunak’s government, who say they’re going to appeal, and it went down like a slice of fresh dog turd with everyone from a slightly annoyed Gavin Robinson to an apoplexic Jim Allister, who couldn’t shout ‘I Told You So’ quickly enough or often enough.

For the DUP leader, it was a bit of a head in the hands moment. With things nice and quiet up at Stormont, he had a bit less to worry about as he continued his job of steadying the party ship. What he didn’t need was for some pesky judge to point out the obvious and have all his critics (and those of his predecessor, Sir Jeffrey) rushing headlong to the Nolan Show studio or to ring Sam McBride.

Will it lead to an upsurge in the number of asylum seekers and migrants coming here? It has to be a possibility, especially with the Irish Government taking an increasingly hard line. But it seems unlikely that thousands of the poor sods will decide to swap London for Lurgan.
