Fifty business leaders from across Northern Ireland came together today at The Merchant Hotel for the first pilot session of The Safe Workplace Initiative – a business-led response to the growing crisis of domestic violence.
The session, hosted by entrepreneur Lynsey Bennett, was developed following recent tragedies that prompted widespread public concern, but limited understanding of what practical action businesses can take.
“I shared a post on LinkedIn after hearing about another young woman losing her life, and the response was overwhelming,” said Lynsey Bennett.
“But what became clear very quickly was that while a lot is being done at policy level, most people — including business owners — don’t know what that actually means in practice, or how to respond in real situations.”
Lynsey, who employs over 40 women across her businesses, identified a critical gap in workplace readiness.
“If one of my team came to me and said they were experiencing domestic abuse, I wouldn’t have known what to say, where to send them, or how to make sure I didn’t make things worse. That’s not acceptable — and I know I’m not alone in that.”
In response, Lynsey brought together a group of contributors to deliver a focused, action-led session for the business community.
Speakers included:
• Gillian Robinson, CEO of Women’s Aid Federation Northern Ireland
• Shirley Anne Palmer, leadership and behavioural specialist
• Emma Weaver, speaker on lived experience
The session provided practical insight into recognising early signs of abuse, understanding the realities and risks of leaving, and how employers can respond safely and appropriately.
Gillian Robinson also introduced attendees to the forthcoming Workplace Charter, aimed at guiding organisations in creating safer, more supportive environments for employees affected by domestic abuse.
“This is not an issue that sits outside the workplace,” said Robinson. “Employers have a vital role to play in recognising signs, responding appropriately, and ensuring people can access support safely.”
Unlike traditional awareness events, The Safe Workplace Initiative is focused on behavioural change and practical application.
“Today was not about talking — it was about action,” said Lynsey “We deliberately brought together leaders who can influence change within their organisations. The goal is simple: people leave knowing what to look for, what to do, and where to go.”
The Merchant Hotel supported the initiative by providing the venue and hospitality for the session.
This pilot marks the beginning of a wider effort to equip businesses across Northern Ireland with the tools, confidence, and frameworks needed to respond effectively to domestic abuse.
Further sessions and a structured workplace programme are expected to follow.
