Lidl Welcomes Planning Approval For New Sprucefield Store

Lidl Northern Ireland has welcomed the decision to grant planning approval for a new store at Sprucefield, marking an important step forward for investment, job creation and an enhanced retail offering in the wider Lisburn area.

The development of the new store is part of Lidl’s £150m investment strategy to expand and modernise its network across Northern Ireland, as the region’s fastest-growing supermarket.

Each new Lidl store typically creates around 30 permanent jobs and supports more than 150 construction jobs, alongside an average £8m investment in the local area.

Serving more than 500,000 shoppers each week across its 44 stores in the region, Lidl Northern Ireland continues to grow in response to strong customer demand for greater choice, quality and value.

Gordon Cruikshanks, Regional Managing Director, Lidl Northern Ireland said:

“We are pleased to receive planning approval for a new Lidl store in Sprucefield. This is an important milestone and reflects our continued commitment to investing in Northern Ireland’s towns and cities.

“Lidl plays a significant role in the regional economy, supporting thousands of jobs, and this decision allows us to continue that investment at a local level. Sprucefield is a well-established retail location with strong regional appeal, and we look forward to bringing our award-winning, great value offer to new and existing customers.”

Lidl Northern Ireland’s expansion aligns with the company’s wider contribution to the regional economy and supply chain. Last year, Lidl procured £530m of goods and services from more than 90 local suppliers in Northern Ireland, supporting strong routes to market both locally and across Lidl’s wider European network.

A new store at Sprucefield will strengthen opportunities for these suppliers by meeting growing customer demand in the area.

Mr Cruikshanks added:

“Our focus now is on progressing this investment as soon as possible so that we can realise our significant economic and social impact in the area. A new store at Sprucefield will bring local employment opportunities, support our growing supplier network and offer customers  in the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council area greater choice and convenience.”

The store will be developed to Lidl’s latest sustainable building standards, incorporating low-carbon technologies and high energy efficiency as part of the retailer’s wider commitment to net-zero.
