Justice Minister Visits SOS Bus NI Belfast Base

SOS Bus NI has welcomed the Minister for Justice, Naomi Long MLA, to its city centre base to hear firsthand about the charity’s life-saving work supporting vulnerable individuals and working alongside the PSNI, NI Ambulance Service, and local authorities.

The Minister met with volunteers, staff, and trustees to learn more about how SOS NI’s services operate – including its night-time city centre response, daytime outreach, and welfare support at concerts and festivals. She also had the opportunity to tour the iconic yellow SOS Bus, which acts as a mobile safe space for those in distress or crisis on Belfast’s streets.

Speaking after the visit, Minister Naomi Long MLA said:

“I was incredibly impressed by the commitment, compassion, and professionalism of the SOS NI team. They play a crucial role in making Belfast a safer and more supportive place for everyone – especially those who are vulnerable, at risk, or in crisis. Their partnership with the PSNI, Belfast City Council and other agencies is a model of community collaboration, and I commend them for the positive difference they make every single week.”

SOS NI has supported over 360,000 individuals since its inception in 2006 and provides over 80 hours of direct crisis support each week, helping to reduce pressure on emergency services while delivering vital frontline care.

Mags Dunne, Chair of SOS NI, added, “We were honoured to host Minister Long and share the heart of what we do – which is about compassion in action. Our volunteers step up week after week to ensure that no one is left alone in their moment of vulnerability. Having the Minister take time to recognise and encourage that work means a great deal to the whole SOS NI family.”

As SOS NI prepares for a busy spring and summer of city centre activity and large-scale events, the charity is continuing to grow its partnerships and strengthen support systems to ensure that Belfast remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
