Northern Ireland’s housing associations have kicked-off the first-ever NI Social Housing Week at Windsor Park where sector leaders celebrated the placement of 22,000 people into new social homes in the last year – that’s the equivalent of filling the 18,500 seater stadium and more.
NI Social Housing Week, which runs from Monday 13th April to Friday 17th April, is being led by 19 housing associations. Throughout the week, members will share stories, insights, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the projects and people shaping modern social housing in Northern Ireland, highlighting the positive impact the sector has on communities and helping to challenge outdated perceptions.
Often viewed through the lens of social support, the sector is also a primary engine of the local economy, employing close to 3,500 people and recruiting many roles across construction, maintenance, and supply chains. In the last year, housing associations took on lending of £267 million and spent £65 million maintaining their stock, while supporting local businesses, apprenticeships, and regional economic growth.
While NI Social Housing Week celebrates these achievements, organisers are clear about the ongoing challenges. Demand continues to outpace supply, and waiting lists remain high across Northern Ireland. Speaking at the launch of NI Social Housing Week, Seamus Leheny, Chief Executive of NIFHA, believes this event is a vital opportunity to shine a light on Northern’s Ireland’s housing sector:
“This week is about showcasing both the scale and heart of the social housing sector. We’re not naive about the fact that waiting lists remain a challenge, but each of the 22,000 individuals housed last year represent families and individuals who have been provided with a safe, secure place to call home.
“NI Social Housing Week is a chance to highlight the difference housing associations make in communities and to inspire even greater impact in the years ahead” he added.
