Northern Ireland Apprentice Week 2025, running from February 3rd to 7th, is an opportunity for young people to explore a range of career pathways, and Biopax, a Belfast-based sustainable packaging company, is putting the spotlight on its innovative apprenticeship programmes.
Biopax, officially launched by Dr. Terry Cross OBE in 2023, operates on an 8.4-acre manufacturing site in West Belfast, offering bespoke sustainable packaging solutions to clients across the UK, Ireland, and beyond. With a £47 million initial investment and a further £20 million recently pumped into cutting-edge technology, the company is a pioneer in sustainable printed cartons and labels.
At its core, Biopax remains committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR), with a particular focus on nurturing young talent which it will showcase this week.
Partnering with Belfast Metropolitan College and training provider People 1st, Biopax offers apprenticeship opportunities in areas such as Printing, Business Administration, Customer Service, and Warehousing and Distribution. These programmes are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences that pave the way for rewarding careers in manufacturing and beyond.
Biopax will also be supporting a series of events in collaboration with Ulster University, as well as local schools and colleges, to enhance awareness of career pathways within the sector. As part of this initiative, Biopax will be participating in careers fairs to connect with students and graduates and highlight opportunities within the industry. Biopax plans to recruit 20 apprentices for the 2025/26 academic year.

Its partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College ensures that apprentices receive top-tier education and practical training, blending classroom learning with on-the-job experience.

Corrie-Lee Carson, Business Administration Apprentice, said: “My apprenticeship at Biopax has been a fantastic experience so far. I have gained practical skills in business admin, HR admin and Compliance while working with a supportive and experienced team. Through my journey with People 1st, I have also completed Level 2 ICT as part of the apprenticeship programme. It’s inspiring to be part of a company that prioritises sustainability and values its employees. Combining education with on-the-job experience, I feel really puts me in a good position to further my career.”

Working with state-of-the-art equipment has given me hands-on experience with some of the most advanced printing technology in the industry. It’s exciting to be part of a company at the forefront of sustainable innovation. The dedicated Apprentice Mentors within the business are really helpful and supportive.”

During Apprentice Week, Biopax will participate in both in-person and virtual events to showcase its apprenticeship opportunities and share the success stories of its apprentices. These events aim to inspire young people to consider an apprenticeship as a pathway to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
Apprenticeships in Northern Ireland are work-based programmes that combine on-the-job experience with training and qualifications, ranging from Level 2 to Level 7. They offer numerous benefits, including earning while you learn, advancing your career, developing a tailored training plan, and gaining essential skills such as literacy, numeracy, and IT. Typically, apprentices work four days a week with a Northern Ireland-based company and spend one day with a training provider, who collaborates with the employer to create a personalised training programmes.
