Belfast has hosted a unique event celebrating resilience, creativity and the transformational power of entrepreneurship. Entitled Fearless: Entrepreneurship as a Pathway the masterclass brought together aspiring entrepreneurs, seasoned business founders and those who support entrepreneurial ventures to explore how challenge and diversity can fuel business success.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Caroline Casey, a globally recognised entrepreneur, author and Founder of the Global 500 movement. Her personal journey — growing up with Ocular Albinism and concealing her visual impairment while striving to “fit in” — has shaped her mission to reframe adversity as advantage. Now legally blind, she has transformed bold ideas into movements that shift how business thinks about inclusion, leadership and competitive edge.
“Entrepreneurship isn’t just about profit,” Dr. Casey says. “It’s about purpose, courage and rewriting the narrative of what’s possible — especially for those whose lived experiences have been seen as a barrier. This message resonates in a business landscape where lived experience — whether shaped by disability, neurodiversity or mental health challenges — can be an engine for innovation”.
According to research published for the UK entrepreneurship sector, one in four entrepreneurs in the UK identifies as disabled or neurodiverse — a testament to the diversity shaping our economy. Delegates heard how this potential often goes unrecognised. Disabled and neurodiverse founders may face barriers accessing finance, support and role models — and 84 % report unequal access to opportunities compared with their non-disabled peers. However, 35 % of these entrepreneurs say their disability has positively influenced their entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the creative problem-solving and resilience that drive business success.
In Northern Ireland, entrepreneurship is also playing a powerful role in creating social and economic value. Recent local research shows that 17 % of social enterprises in the region are led by people with disabilities or who are neurodiverse, contributing to jobs, community impact and turnover across sectors.
The Fearless event was championed by Belfast City Council with support from Pacem Advisory and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer. Taking place at Invest NI, it challenged assumptions and expanded the narrative around who becomes an entrepreneur and why — celebrating courage, innovation and the confidence to take bold steps forward.
