Volvo Doubles Hybrid Range

By James Stinson

Volvo has unveiled new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of its popular XC60 and XC90 SUVs, giving buyers significantly more electric-only driving capability while retaining the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer journeys.

The headline figure is the dramatic increase in electric range. The XC60 can now travel up to 124 miles on battery power alone, while the larger seven-seat XC90 manages up to 99 miles. That is more than double the range of the outgoing plug-in hybrid models and puts both cars among the longest-range PHEVs currently on sale.

More power, more flexibility

The new powertrain combines a larger battery with a more powerful electric motor. Volvo says the setup is designed to allow many owners to complete their daily commuting, school runs and local errands without using any petrol at all, while still offering the convenience of a conventional hybrid for longer distances.

Buyers will be able to choose between T6 and T8 plug-in hybrid powertrains in the XC60. The T6 produces 351bhp, while the range-topping T8 delivers 421bhp and can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. The XC90 long-range plug-in hybrid will be offered in T8 form with 421bhp.

Fresh look for the XC60

Alongside the new drivetrain, the XC60 has received a substantial facelift. Changes include a redesigned grille, bonnet, front bumper and wings, new wheel designs and an updated version of Volvo’s distinctive Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. Inside, there is a new dashboard design, upgraded materials and a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen featuring Volvo’s latest infotainment system and Google Gemini voice assistant integration.

Safety remains a key selling point, with advanced driver assistance systems including emergency braking, lane-change assistance and a 360-degree camera system.

Prices have yet to be confirmed, but the XC60 range is expected to start from around £52,000, with the larger XC90 commanding a premium over that. While some buyers may still prefer a fully electric SUV, these new long-range plug-in hybrids could prove an attractive middle ground for drivers not yet ready to make the full switch.
