Electric GTI Goes Wild

By James Stinson

For half a century, the three letters GTI have signified affordable performance, from the original Golf GTI of 1976 through to the fast Golfs that became the benchmark for hot hatchbacks everywhere.

Now Volkswagen is taking its iconic performance badge into entirely new territory with the arrival of the all-electric ID.3 GTI, the most powerful production GTI the company has ever built.

A GTI for the electric age

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 322bhp and a hefty 545Nm of torque. That makes the new ID.3 GTI quicker than many established sports cars, covering the 0-62mph sprint in just 5.6 seconds before reaching a limited top speed of 124mph.

As with most high-performance electric cars, it is the instant torque that is likely to leave the biggest impression. Maximum pulling power is available from the moment the accelerator is pressed, giving the ID.3 GTI a level of responsiveness that traditional petrol-powered hot hatches can struggle to match.

Volkswagen has also equipped the car with a range of performance-focused technologies as standard. These include an adaptive DCC sports chassis, progressive steering, Launch Control and a dedicated GTI driving mode that sharpens the car’s responses and alters the cockpit displays.

Familiar GTI touches

While the powertrain may be new, Volkswagen has worked hard to ensure the ID.3 GTI still feels like part of the GTI family.

A red stripe stretches across the front end, echoing the detailing of the original Golf GTI, while standard 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels pay tribute to the famous GTI gathering in Austria. Tornado Red, arguably the most iconic GTI colour of them all, returns as an exterior paint choice.

Inside, there are sports seats trimmed in a modern interpretation of the classic tartan fabric that adorned early Golf GTIs. Red stitching, GTI-specific graphics and a sports steering wheel complete the performance-themed cabin.

Everyday practicality remains

Unlike many sports cars, the ID.3 GTI aims to balance performance with everyday usability.

A 79kWh battery delivers a claimed driving range of up to 373 miles, while rapid charging at speeds of up to 183kW can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 29 minutes.

Entry-level specification is generous, with IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights, the adaptive sports suspension, GTI drive mode, Launch Control, a large 12.9-inch infotainment display, digital cockpit and 20-inch alloy wheels all fitted as standard.

The verdict

Purists may miss the soundtrack and character of the petrol-powered GTIs that built the badge’s reputation. Volkswagen has even added an artificial combustion-engine sound in GTI mode to help bridge that gap.

Yet judged purely on performance, technology and everyday practicality, the ID.3 GTI looks set to be a compelling electric hot hatch. It may be very different from the GTIs of old, but it appears determined to keep the spirit of the badge alive for a new generation.

Volkswagen has confirmed that German order books will open in early 2027. UK pricing has yet to be announced.
