Chinese car makers may be producing increasingly sophisticated vehicles, but they still have a habit of choosing slightly baffling names. The latest example is the DENZA BAO 5, a large, rugged SUV whose badge may not trip off the tongue, but whose credentials suggest it should have the attention of established premium off-road brands firmly in its sights.
The BAO 5 is the first SUV destined for UK showrooms from DENZA, the premium-focused sub-brand of BYD. Rather than attempting to win customers simply through bargain pricing, DENZA has made it clear that it wants to compete directly with the likes of Land Rover, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Jeep by offering cutting-edge technology, high levels of luxury and serious capability.
Available to order now, with first UK deliveries expected in early 2027, the BAO 5 combines a traditional ladder-frame chassis and genuine off-road hardware with an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Serious power, serious pace
Under the skin is DENZA’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) plug-in hybrid system. Unlike many conventional hybrids, the BAO 5 uses electric motors on both axles, delivering four-wheel drive and substantial performance.
The front motor produces the equivalent of 268bhp, while the rear contributes 382bhp. Combined system output stands at an impressive 536bhp, along with 760Nm of torque. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acts primarily as a generator for the battery, although it can also help drive the wheels when required.
That power translates into surprisingly brisk performance for such a sizeable SUV. The entry-level Elegance completes the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.8 seconds, while the slightly heavier Ultimate requires 5.0 seconds.
At the same time, the BAO 5 offers a useful electric-only driving range of up to 56 miles from its 31.8kWh Blade Battery. When charging is required, DC rapid charging at up to 100kW allows the battery to be replenished from 30 to 80 per cent in around 16 minutes. DENZA claims a total combined driving range of up to 519 miles.
Luxury-focused specification
The BAO 5 range starts with the Elegance trim, yet “entry level” feels like something of a misnomer given the amount of equipment included.
Standard features include a 15.6-inch central touchscreen with Google built-in, separate displays for both the driver and front passenger, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. Front occupants are particularly well catered for, with seats offering heating, ventilation and massage functions.
An 18-speaker Devialet audio system, 50W wireless phone charging and even a temperature-controlled storage compartment capable of heating or cooling food and drinks further reinforce the BAO 5’s premium positioning. Externally, the Elegance rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and features roof rails and fixed side steps.
Built for adventure
Customers seeking maximum luxury and off-road ability can opt for the Ultimate grade.
In addition to larger 20-inch alloy wheels, it gains electrically deploying side steps, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated rear seats and a second wireless charging pad.
The standout feature is DENZA’s DiSus-P suspension system. Standard on the Ultimate, it combines air suspension with adaptive damping and can alter ride height by up to 140mm. The technology is designed to improve both on-road comfort and off-road capability, while a self-levelling camping mode helps create a flat platform when parked on uneven ground.
The BAO 5 also features electronic differential locks, a sophisticated torque distribution system and 16 selectable driving modes, underlining its serious off-road intent.
Pricing and positioning
All of this technology and equipment comes at a price. The DENZA BAO 5 Elegance starts from £69,500, while the flagship Ultimate costs £78,880.
Those figures place the BAO 5 firmly among established premium SUV rivals rather than below them. Whether UK buyers are ready to embrace a new luxury 4×4 brand remains to be seen, but on paper at least, DENZA’s latest arrival has the performance, technology and specification to make the premium off-road establishment sit up and take notice.
