BYD’s budget hybrid bid

The new BYD Atto 2 DM-i could be the car that introduces a whole new audience to plug-in hybrids, writes James Stinson

Electric cars grab most of the headlines these days but not everyone is ready to make the switch.

For many drivers, concerns about charging, range and upfront cost remain significant barriers. That explains why plug-in hybrids continue to attract interest. They offer the possibility of electric driving for shorter journeys while retaining the convenience of a petrol engine for longer trips.

The latest BYD Atto 2 DM-I arrives firmly aimed at these buyers.

BYD has already established itself as one of the fastest-growing brands in the UK, largely thanks to a mix of keen pricing, impressive technology and generous equipment levels. The Atto 2 DM-i builds on that formula by bringing the firm’s “Super Hybrid” technology to the highly competitive compact SUV sector.

SUV style

From the outside, the Atto 2 DM-i looks every inch the modern family crossover.

The styling is rugged rather than radical, with chunky proportions, LED lighting and a fairly upright stance. At 4.33 metres long, it sits towards the larger end of the small SUV class and that pays dividends once you climb aboard.

Cabin space is one of the car’s strongest attributes. There is ample room in both rows and even taller adults should find sufficient head and legroom in the rear. Families will also appreciate the practical 425-litre boot, which is larger than many rivals manage.

The interior is modern and uncluttered. Dominating the dashboard is a 12.8-inch touchscreen, while an 8.8-inch digital driver’s display handles key information. BYD has also embraced Google’s ecosystem, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to the Play Store integrated into the infotainment system.

As is increasingly expected, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.

Plug-in power

Unlike the fully electric Atto 2, this DM-i version combines electric and petrol power.

All models use a 1.5-litre petrol engine working alongside an electric motor and battery pack. Most of the time, the vehicle behaves much like an electric car, with the petrol engine frequently acting as a generator rather than directly driving the wheels.

Two versions are available.

Entry-level Active models produce 163bhp and can travel up to 24 miles in electric-only mode thanks to a 7.8kWh battery. Combined range is an impressive 577 miles.

Boost versions raise output to 209bhp and get a much larger 18kWh battery. That increases the electric-only driving range to around 58 miles while total range rises to an impressive 621 miles.

For many commuters, the larger battery could allow most weekday journeys to be completed without using a drop of petrol.

Performance is respectable rather than exciting. The Active reaches 62mph in 9.1 seconds, while the more powerful Boost cuts that to 7.5 seconds.

Living with it

On the road, the Atto 2 DM-i majors on comfort rather than driver engagement.

The ride is generally compliant, visibility is good and the elevated seating position will appeal to SUV buyers. Around town, the electric assistance makes progress smooth and quiet.

However, it is not the most involving car in its class. The steering lacks a little feedback and keen drivers may find rivals from Ford, Mazda and Kia more rewarding on a twisting road.

There are also a few usability niggles. BYD’s touchscreen systems have improved significantly but some functions remain buried in menus, requiring more interaction than is ideal when on the move.

Still, where the Atto 2 scores highly is value.

Value matters

The range opens with the Active model, priced from £26,995.

Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED rear lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated door mirrors, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, four USB ports, the 12.8-inch touchscreen, Google built-in connectivity and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems.

The Boost, priced from £29,995, adds larger 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, privacy glass, a panoramic roof, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, vegan leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging and vehicle-to-load capability.

In an increasingly crowded market, the Atto 2 DM-i doesn’t rewrite the rule book. It isn’t the sharpest SUV to drive or the most polished. However, it does blend impressive efficiency, generous equipment and strong practicality at an attractive price point.
