BYD Shark arrives to shake up the pick-up market

By James Stinson

Pick-up trucks have traditionally been the preserve of diesel engines, rugged workhorses and a focus on towing rather than technology. But the arrival of the new BYD Shark suggests the market could be entering a new phase.

The Chinese manufacturer has revealed its first-ever pick-up for Europe, combining plug-in hybrid power with performance figures that would embarrass many hot hatches. At a time when electrified pick-ups remain something of a novelty, the Shark offers a glimpse of where the sector could be heading as more manufacturers bring battery-powered and hybrid workhorses to market over the next few years.

Performance with a difference

At 5.5 metres long, the Shark is a substantial double-cab pick-up with seating for five, but its headline figures are anything but conventional.

Power comes from BYD’s new Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) plug-in hybrid system. This combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, one on each axle, delivering four-wheel drive and a combined output of 430bhp and 650Nm of torque.

The result is a claimed 0-62mph time of just 5.7 seconds, making it significantly quicker than most diesel-powered rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.

BYD’s system is designed to prioritise electric driving whenever possible. The petrol engine often acts as a generator, supplying energy to the electric motors and battery, helping deliver smoother performance and improved efficiency.

Electric range and charging

One of the Shark’s biggest selling points is its ability to travel up to 55.9 miles on electric power alone.

A 32.2kWh Blade Battery, said to be the largest fitted to any pick-up in its class, helps deliver a combined range of up to 419 miles when fully charged and fuelled.

Charging performance is respectable too. The Shark supports 11kW AC charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 15 per cent in just over three hours, while 55kW DC rapid charging can replenish the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in around 21 minutes.

Built for work and play

Despite its focus on technology, the Shark still aims to fulfil traditional pick-up duties.

It features a 2,500kg towing capacity, a payload of up to 790kg and a 1,200-litre load bed. Intelligent all-wheel drive comes with dedicated driving modes for sand, mud, snow and gravel, while hill descent control is fitted as standard.

Perhaps the most useful feature for tradespeople and outdoor enthusiasts is the Vehicle-to-Load system. Delivering up to 6.6kW of power through two onboard sockets, it can run everything from power tools to camping equipment directly from the vehicle.

Technology-heavy specification

Unlike many rivals, the Shark will be offered in a single highly equipped trim level.

Standard equipment includes vegan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system, head-up display, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a huge 15.6-inch touchscreen claimed to be the largest in the pick-up segment.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and a full suite of driver assistance systems also come as standard.

Can it challenge established rivals?

The Shark’s combination of performance, electric-only capability and technology certainly gives it a strong USP against established players such as the Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.

Some buyers may question whether a plug-in hybrid can match the long-term durability and towing credentials of traditional diesel alternatives. Its 2,500kg towing limit also trails the 3,500kg maximum offered by some rivals.

However, for buyers seeking lower running costs, improved refinement and the ability to complete many journeys on electricity alone, the Shark looks like a compelling alternative.

Prices start from £47,290 including VAT, with orders open now and first UK deliveries expected during the fourth quarter of 2026. As electrification continues to spread into every vehicle segment, the BYD Shark could be remembered as one of the models that helped bring the pick-up market into a new era.
