Audi revives A2 as ultra-efficient electric hatchback

By James Stinson

Audi has resurrected one of its most distinctive model names with the launch of the new A2 e-tron, an electric hatchback that promises to be the most efficient car the German brand has ever built.

Set to open for UK orders in October 2026 ahead of first deliveries in early 2027, the A2 e-tron combines a compact footprint with impressive range, generous cabin space and a starting price of £32,200. In a market increasingly crowded with electric family cars, Audi believes efficiency rather than outright battery size is the key to attracting buyers.

Designed to go further

The headline figure is a maximum WLTP range of up to 401 miles, placing the A2 e-tron among the longest-range electric cars available at this price point.

Audi says careful aerodynamic development has played a major role in achieving that figure. With a drag coefficient of just 0.24, the A2 e-tron is the most aerodynamic compact model in the company’s line-up. Features such as a largely enclosed underbody, active cooling vents and specially designed aero wheels help reduce energy consumption.

The result is remarkably low power consumption of just 12.8kWh per 100km in its most efficient form, making it the most energy-efficient Audi ever produced.

Four power outputs available

Unlike many rivals that offer only one or two drivetrain options, the A2 e-tron range will be available with four power levels and three battery sizes.

Entry-level models use a 52kWh battery and a rear-mounted motor producing 168bhp, delivering up to 262 miles of range and a 0-62mph time of 8.8 seconds.

Above that sits a 188bhp version with a 61kWh battery capable of travelling up to 320 miles between charges. Buyers wanting maximum range can opt for a 229bhp model paired with an 84kWh battery, which stretches the range to an impressive 401 miles while cutting the 0-62mph sprint to seven seconds.

The flagship version develops 321bhp and 545Nm of torque, reaching 62mph in just 5.7 seconds while still offering up to 391 miles of range. All models feature rear-wheel drive, which Audi says helps deliver balanced handling and strong traction.

Fast charging and smart energy features

Charging performance is competitive across the range. The larger 84kWh battery can accept DC charging at up to 183kW, with a 10-80 per cent recharge taking around 29 minutes. Smaller battery models support charging at up to 100kW and 105kW, achieving the same top-up in as little as 24 minutes.

One of the A2’s more unusual features is optional bidirectional charging. This allows owners to power electrical devices from the car via Vehicle-to-Load technology, while Vehicle-to-Home functionality enables the battery to act as a domestic energy storage system when paired with compatible equipment.

Premium technology as standard

Audi has loaded even entry-level versions with equipment. Standard features include an 11.9-inch digital driver display, a 12.8-inch curved touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, parking sensors, emergency brake assist and lane safety technology.

The infotainment system includes Audi’s AI-enhanced voice assistant alongside an e-tron route planner that can automatically schedule charging stops and optimise journeys.

Inside, Audi has prioritised practicality and clever storage solutions. The cabin features a fabric-covered dashboard design called Softwrap, while an innovative magnetic Fidlock fastening system allows accessories such as cup holders and cable bags to be securely attached around the cabin. Boot capacity stands at 396 litres, rising to 1,336 litres with the rear seats folded.

Taking on the electric establishment

With prices starting from £32,200, the A2 e-tron undercuts many premium electric rivals while offering significantly more range than some mainstream competitors.

Its strongest challengers are likely to include the Tesla Model 3, Renault Scenic E-Tech, Volkswagen ID.3, Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30. Audi’s premium badge, impressive efficiency and generous standard equipment could make it a particularly attractive alternative for buyers seeking a compact EV without sacrificing long-distance usability.
