By Mark Wiggins, Power NI Product Innovation Manager.
For decades, the relationship between energy companies and customers was simple. Electricity was generated in large power stations, delivered through the grid, and consumed in homes and businesses across Northern Ireland.
Today, that relationship is changing.
Across the world, and increasingly here in Northern Ireland, households are becoming active participants in the energy system. With the growth of solar panels, battery storage, electric vehicles and smart energy technologies, more people are generating, storing and managing their own electricity than ever before.
This shift is transforming the traditional role of the homeowner from energy consumer to energy producer.
And while we’re still at the beginning of that journey, the direction of travel is clear, the home of the future won’t simply use energy, it will create it.
A new chapter in Northern Ireland’s energy story
Northern Ireland has set ambitious targets to decarbonise its energy system and increase renewable electricity generation. While renewable energy already accounts for 43.5% of electricity consumption, the region’s Energy Strategy is targeting at least 80% renewable electricity by 2030.
Meeting that challenge will require more than large-scale wind farms and infrastructure investment. It will also depend on the contribution of households.
Research commissioned by the Department for the Economy found that solar panels are currently installed on just 3.4% of homes in Northern Ireland, highlighting the enormous opportunity for growth. The same research found that homes with solar panels already generate around 28% of their electricity needs through solar energy.
As technology becomes more affordable and accessible, we expect to see many more households embracing renewable energy solutions over the coming years.
The rise of the producer household
For many homeowners, the appeal of solar energy starts with the opportunity to lower energy bills. But the benefits extend much further.
By generating electricity from their own rooftops, customers gain greater visibility and control over how energy is used within the home. While smart meters and dynamic tariffs are not yet available in Northern Ireland, the simple combination of Energy transition products like solar panels, battery storage, and electric vehicles, already help households decide when it is best to generate, store and consume electricity.
This marks a significant shift in how we think about energy.
Rather than simply drawing power from the grid, customers are becoming active participants in a smarter, more flexible energy system.
In many ways, households are becoming mini power stations, generating renewable electricity that supports both their own needs and the wider energy transition.
Power NI’s role in the energy transition
As Northern Ireland’s leading electricity supplier, serving more than half a million customers, we recognise that customers increasingly need more than a traditional energy provider.
They want trusted advice, practical solutions and support as they navigate a rapidly changing energy landscape.
That’s why Power NI has been expanding its renewable and energy transition offering, helping customers access technologies that make it easier to generate, manage and use energy more efficiently. Already well established as a Microgeneration supplier servicing thousands of small generating customers, we have expanded our product offering further, with tariffs designed specifically for electric vehicle owners and a range of electric vehicle home chargers and install options available.
In spring 2025 we took our energy transition journey even further, launching solar photovoltaic installation service, providing homeowners with access to renewable energy generation, alongside expert installation, and ongoing support.
This development is another step forward in Power NI’s commitment to shaping the future of energytransition, supporting customers as they adopt technologies that reduce emissions, improve efficiency and putting them in greater control of their energy future.
From electricity supplier to energy partner
The future energy system will look very different from today’s.
Homes will increasingly incorporate solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, smart controls and connected technologies that work together to optimise energy use. Customers will have more opportunities to generate their own power, reduce waste and make informed decisions about how they consume electricity.
For energy companies, this means evolving too.
Success will be measured not only by the electricity supplied, but by the ability to help customers understand and benefit from new technologies.
At Power NI, we see our role as helping customers make that transition with confidence.
Energy transition is no longer something we’re talking about for the future, it’s happening now. More customers are looking at ways to take greater control of their energy use, whether that’s through solar panels, electric vehicles, battery storage or smart energy technologies.
At Power NI, we’re committed to making that journey as simple and accessible as possible. We believe every customer should have the opportunity to benefit from new energy technologies, and we’re investing in products and services that help households become active participants in a more sustainable energy future
Looking ahead
The transition to a lower-carbon economy presents one of the biggest opportunities Northern Ireland has seen in decades.
The technologies that once seemed futuristic are already becoming part of everyday life. Solar panels are appearing on rooftops across the country and electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common on our roads.
The next generation of homes will not simply consume electricity. They will generate it, store it, manage it and use it more intelligently than ever before.
Every home may not become an energy producer overnight, but the trend is undeniable.
The future of energy is increasingly local, renewable and customer-led, and Northern Ireland has an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of that transformation.
