From making faster decisions to understanding money and building an authentic brand, entrepreneur, international keynote speaker and business mentor Kim Calvert shares ten lessons from a decade in business.
When Northern Ireland entrepreneur Kim Calvert founded Dynamite Lifestyle ten years ago, she was entering an industry that would change dramatically.
Today, she has built Dynamite Lifestyle into an international personal and professional development business and works with corporates, entrepreneurs and business leaders around the world as a keynote speaker and business mentor.
Her work applies principles of mindset and performance to the realities of business – leadership, decision-making, resilience, sales and sustainable success.
Following Dynamite Lifestyle’s tenth anniversary and its recent Inception event at Dublin’s Mansion House – a two – day event focused on mindset, leadership, personal development and achieving greater success in business and life – Kim shares ten lessons that have shaped how she has built and led her business over the past decade.
Many were influenced by her late mentor Bob Proctor, the internationally renowned author and speaker whose work on mindset, performance and human potential influenced entrepreneurs and business leaders around the world.
1. Make the decision
“Everything changes the moment you make a committed decision.”
Kim believes entrepreneurs can spend too long waiting for certainty.
“We weren’t taught how to make decisions, so we often look to other people for reassurance. Some of the biggest changes in my life and business happened when I stopped asking ‘Can I?’ and decided ‘I will.’
“There’s a big difference between being interested and being committed. Interested people do what’s convenient. Committed people do what it takes.”
2. Know what is driving your ambition
Ambition has fuelled Kim’s growth, but she believes the motivation behind it matters.
“When ambition is driven by fear, comparison or proving yourself, success becomes exhausting. When it comes from genuinely loving your work and wanting to serve people, it creates a completely different energy.”
For business owners, she believes having a strong ‘why’ provides direction when motivation inevitably dips.
3. Authenticity is a business strength
One Proctor lesson had a profound impact: “If I want to be free, I have to be me.”
“I realised I didn’t really know who ‘me’ was. We define ourselves by roles, jobs and other people’s expectations.”
As Kim became more comfortable being herself, it influenced her business too.
“The more I stopped seeking approval, the more my life and business expanded. In a founder-led business, authenticity can be one of your greatest assets.”
4. Understand what creates results
Kim believes working harder isn’t necessarily the answer when a business isn’t getting the desired result.
“Results can be traced backwards through actions, habits, beliefs and thinking. We’re often trying to DO more when sometimes we need to look at who we are BEING.”
That means examining what is driving decisions and behaviour rather than continually treating the symptoms of a business problem.
5. Your thinking affects your business
“What occupies your mind influences what you notice, the decisions you make and ultimately the actions you take.”
For Kim, mindset has practical commercial consequences.
“If you don’t believe in your value, it can affect how you sell, price and communicate. If you constantly expect something to fail, that influences the action you’re prepared to take.”
6. Take responsibility quickly
Ten years in business inevitably brings challenges and change.
“You can’t control markets, other people or every circumstance, but you can control your response.”
Kim sees personal responsibility as essential to leadership.
“It isn’t about blame. It’s asking: given where I am now, what can I do next?”
7. Implementation beats information
Kim spent years studying personal development and success principles, but says knowledge alone changes little.
“You can attend every seminar, read every business book and listen to every podcast, but the transformation happens when you apply what you learn.”
Her lesson for entrepreneurs is simple: consistent implementation beats continually searching for the next answer.
8. Recognise how far you’ve come
Entrepreneurs naturally focus on the next goal, but Kim believes relentless ambition has a downside.
“You can become so focused on what’s next that you never appreciate what you’ve already created.”
Gratitude, she says, doesn’t mean becoming less ambitious.
“I still want to grow. I’ve just learned you can want more while being genuinely grateful for where you are.”
9. Get comfortable with money
Kim’s relationship with money has changed significantly.
“Our beliefs around money affect whether we pursue opportunities, communicate our value, invest, sell confidently and receive money.”
She now views money as an exchange of value and believes entrepreneurs need to become comfortable discussing it.
“Learning how to earn money is important, but so is learning how to manage, invest and multiply it.”
10. Build the vision before you have the roadmap
One of Proctor’s teachings remains central to Dynamite Lifestyle: “If you can see it in your mind, you will hold it in your hand.”
For Kim, it translates directly to entrepreneurship.
“Every business begins as an idea. Dynamite Lifestyle did too. I’ve learned not to dismiss a vision because I can’t yet see exactly how I’ll get there.”
The key is turning that vision into action.
“Think bigger, but then make the decisions, take the actions and do the work required to bring it to life.”
Ten years on, Kim’s ambitions remain considerable, but her definition of success has evolved.
“Growing a business and growing as a person aren’t separate things. Every new level has required something different from me.
“Ten years has shown me what’s possible. Now I’m excited to see what we can build in the next ten.”
