Chinese SUVs are arriving at a relentless pace and buyers are responding positively. The new Lepas L8 PHEV is the latest newcomer to arrive on these shores, joining a growing list of Chinese-built SUVs that are shaking up the market with keen pricing, generous equipment and increasingly polished products.
Chinese brands have been making remarkable progress in Britain. In fact, Chinese cars accounted for around 15 per cent of all new cars sold in the UK during the first half of 2026, roughly double last year’s figure. Brands such as MG, Omoda, Jaecoo, BYD and GWM have all enjoyed success, and now Lepas hopes to carve out its own slice of the booming SUV market.
The L8 is the flagship model in the fledgling Lepas range and order books have now officially opened, with first customer deliveries expected from September.
Hybrid power with big range
Unlike many of the new Chinese arrivals that rely solely on battery power, the L8 uses a plug-in hybrid setup designed to offer the best of both worlds.
Every L8 is powered by Lepas’s Super Hybrid System, which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and an 18.4kWh battery pack. Lepas claims the SUV can travel up to 56 miles on electric power alone, which should be enough for many daily commutes without using a drop of petrol.
For longer journeys, the combination of petrol and battery power delivers a claimed total range of up to 745 miles between fill-ups and recharges, helping to ease concerns about charging infrastructure on longer trips.
Lepas has yet to publish full UK performance figures, but the emphasis appears to be on efficiency and low running costs rather than outright speed. The generous electric range should place it among the stronger performers in the plug-in hybrid SUV class.
Plenty of standard equipment
The L8 launches in two trim levels: Essence and Elevate.
Even the entry-level Essence model appears keen to impress value-conscious buyers. Lepas is positioning the car as offering a substantial amount of equipment for the money, a tactic that has proved successful for several Chinese rivals.
While final UK specifications are still being rolled out, buyers can expect the sort of features now considered essential in this sector, including a large infotainment system, digital instrumentation, advanced driver assistance technology and a comprehensive suite of safety equipment.
Insurance costs could also be relatively reasonable. The L8 has secured a competitive Group 30E Thatcham insurance rating, helped by security measures that exceed standard requirements.
Move up to the Elevate model and buyers can expect additional luxury touches, enhanced technology and upgraded cabin materials to justify the higher asking price.
Taking on established rivals
The family SUV sector is one of the most fiercely contested parts of the market. The Lepas will go head-to-head with established players such as the Kia Sportage PHEV, Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid, Ford Kuga PHEV and MG HS Plug-in Hybrid.
On paper, the Lepas stacks up well. Its 56-mile electric range is competitive, while the substantial claimed combined range gives it an edge for drivers covering larger annual mileages.
The biggest question mark surrounds brand recognition and long-term resale values. Established names such as Kia and Volkswagen benefit from years of customer loyalty and extensive dealer networks. Lepas, by contrast, is starting from scratch.
Competitive pricing
Pricing looks one of the L8’s strongest cards.
The entry-level Essence starts from £34,900 on-the-road, while the range-topping Elevate costs £37,900. That places it firmly in contention with mainstream family SUV rivals while offering a generous amount of technology and hybrid capability.
Finance deals are also aggressive. PCP packages start from £398.99 per month for the Essence and £438.99 per month for the Elevate, while eligible retail customers can currently benefit from a £500 test-drive voucher incentive.
For buyers in Northern Ireland, however, there is one obvious hurdle. Lepas does not yet have a local retailer. The nearest dealership is currently located in Ayr. Given the speed at which Chinese brands are expanding across the UK, though, it would be no surprise to see a Northern Ireland outlet appear before too long.
The Chinese SUV wave shows little sign of breaking and, if the L8 delivers on its promise of value, technology and efficiency, Lepas could have a surprisingly strong contender on its hands.
