Plans to transform Meenan Square Project into a mixed-use residential and community led development have been given the green light by Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC).
The long-anticipated project, supported by The Executive Office’s Urban Villages Initiative, was approved by DCSDC’S planning committee this week.
Approval covers both the residential element of the scheme, delivered through a local application, and the mixed-use element, which will include new commercial units, office spaces and a dedicated community hub.
The decision represents a major milestone in years of collaboration between the local community, government partners and the applicant team to revitalise and re-establish the area as a thriving community.
First Minister, Michelle O’Neill said: “This is a landmark day for the city of Derry. Today’s decision is about the future, one built on regeneration, opportunity and community pride. This investment will deliver much needed modern facilities, support local jobs, and create a shared space that reflects the resilience and spirit of the city.”
Deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly MLA, said: “The Meenan Square project shows what can be achieved when government, housing providers and communities work together. Through the Urban Villages Initiative, we are investing in people and places, helping to transform neighbourhoods.”
The multi-million-pound project will work to deliver lasting social and economic outcomes for the area providing new homes, community facilities and a revitalised public space designed to strengthen local connections and promote good relations.
Sheena McCallion, Chief Executive of Apex Housing Association, commented:
“Apex is proud to have secured the planning approval for the transformation of Meenan Square. This project will restore a key focal point in the Bogside with new homes, community, youth and commercial spaces designed to serve and support local residents for generations to come. We’re particularly excited about the inclusion of critically needed new homes within the city.”
Charles Lamberton, Chairperson, Meenan Square Developments Ltd stated:
We’re delighted that this project has received full planning approval. The transformation of Meenan Square will be a huge boost for the whole area, bringing new state-of-the-art facilities and amenities, more homes and a new community space in the heart of the Bogside. This is another really positive step that moves us closer to full completion of this exciting redevelopment, putting this important site back into community use.”
The applicants have been supported by GM Design Associates acting as the Project Architects, and Turley, providing independent Planning & Strategic Communication advice and services.
The development is expected to begin construction in 2026.
