The design and installation of an intelligent, future-proof security system at one of Ireland’s largest entertainment venues has earned a family-owned Belfast company international recognition.   Diamond Systems, based at Heron Road in the city, designed and installed the £500,000 state-of-the-art system, comprising over 150 Axis IP cameras capable of delivering razor sharp images, even in low light or adverse weather conditions, at the Odyssey Complex in Belfast.

The system – one of the most innovative in Europe – utilises Axis Lightfinder technology and boasts an innovative speed dry function to shake off water residue from outdoor security camera lenses.  Meanwhile the use of Zipstream technology, which compresses video footage, has significantly reduced the cost of data storage at the venue.

Now the project is vying for international recognition on 21st November as a nominee in the Security Project of the Year category of the Security and Fire Excellence Awards in London. The awards are supported by the International Fire and Security Exhibition and Conference organisation (IFSEC), and provide a platform for innovative companies to demonstrate their capability and professionalism on a global stage.

Steve Snoddon, Joint Managing Director of Diamond Systems says: “We installed the original CCTV system 18 years ago when the complex was first developed. While providing value at the time, technology has progressed at such a rapid pace since, that it was time for us to re-evaluate the technology available to support its requirements. Working closely with our partner, Axis Communications, we designed an innovative, future-proof system, based around the operational requirements of the Odyssey. The system incorporates the latest technology and delivers a cost-effective solution, whilst mitigating cybersecurity risks.”

Peter Dempsey, Key Account Manager at Axis Communications, comments As the leading entertainment venue of its kind in Northern Ireland, the Odyssey’s security requirements are continuously evolving. Our commitment to really understand the business, and partnering with organisations such as Diamond Systems, ensured we could deliver a solution that was tailored to its needs.”

The system’s superior imaging has already shown its worth through the successful prosecution of several cases of minor vandalism at the complex.

Brian Hughes, Group Head of Facilities at The Odyssey Complex, adds: “Through the use of intelligent applications such as Lightfinder and Zipstream, we can be confident we have the technology to support our unique security needs. Working closely with Diamond Systems and Axis, we were also keen to ensure the system has capacity to include analytics in the future. This could include customer footfall and queue management, bringing benefits in terms of operational effectiveness, guest satisfaction and of course, visitor safety.”

Diamond Systems, established in 1987, has more than 30 years’ experience as a market leader in electronic fire and security solutions. A second-generation family business based in Belfast’s Harbour Estate, the company has always placed quality, customer care, and innovation at the very core of its business and as a result is currently one of the most respected specialists within the local fire and security industry.
