Salt and flour are two essential ingredients in an ambitious and novel Dragon Summer Reading Project organised by The Goliath Trust charity in thirteen Belfast primary schools. One hundred and thirty children will make a dough that will then be cooked and painted.

The salt and flour connection to the reading project means the children will have to read and follow the instructions to make the dough before completing their artistic creations.

The salt and flour part of the project comes towards the end of the nine-week summer holiday period.

The Goliath Trust has also delivered writing materials, age-appropriate books, pencils, badges, colouring books, notepads, wall planners, magazines, paints and play dough.

Georgia Knapp, from Dept for Foreign Affairs, Belfast, who helped fund the project, said: “We are delighted to help the Dragon Summer Reading Project. Reading is so important and a project such as this will stimulate a love of reading for the pupils.

Teacher and Goliath Trust Board member, Siobhan Scott, said: “This is a fun-filled project with a serious aim. When the children are on their summer holidays, we don’t want to see their reading ability slip. We want to encourage them to read with fun projects, books and magazines.

“Last year, we ran a pilot with pupils from Taughmonagh Primary School and St Oliver Plunkett Primary School and the feedback was positive. It more than justified Goliath’s decision to roll out the project to fourteen of the twenty-three schools linked to our charity. The children are known as Val’s Pals, named after our friendly Dragon mascot.

“We will carefully monitor and assess the value of the project in September and if the pilot was anything to go by, then I’m sure this year’s project will be a great success.”

The funding for the project came from ESB Energy for Generations Fund and the Reconciliation Funds, Dept for Foreign Affairs.
