Dancers are now being sought for this year’s edition of Parkinson’s UK Does Strictly, to follow in the footsteps of Bangor man Paul McCourt, 60, who won last year’s even despite never having danced before and having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s nine years ago.   Eight couples of wannabe dancers competed last year, and rehearsals begin at Cliftonville Golf Club on 23 September for those wishing to have a go at matching Paul’s feat this year.

Parkinson’s UK is the leading charity driving better care, treatments and quality of life for those with the condition. Its mission is to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s through cutting edge research, information, support and campaigning.

Paul himself explains: “Clearly, Parkinson’s UK’s support and research mean a lot to me having been diagnosed with the condition in late 2010. The charity offers people living with Parkinson’s, and their family and friends, vital hope.

“When I was approached about participating in a Strictly fundraiser, I was very wary, especially getting to know a dance partner I’d never met before! But in the end I just really loved it!

“The dress rehearsal was a disaster. So on the night I said ‘Let’s just go out and enjoy it’. Then I took a freezing episode and literally couldn’t go out! But I was able to go out the third time we were called, when someone gave me a nudge, and then no one was more shocked than I was when we won!

“This shows Parkinson’s UK Does Strictly is more than just a fundraiser. It encourages people living with the condition to engage in movement, which in fact helps improve the symptoms. What is more, it is a demonstration that having Parkinson’s need not stop you trying new things – and even succeeding at them!

“Clearly having the condition has restricted me in some ways but I would never have dreamt in participating in something like this before I had it. So there are positives from it too.

“So I would urge anyone to have a go this year – it is a great way to raise money for a good cause, but most of all you will learn a lot and have a lot of fun!”

The final showdown of this year’s event takes place at the Stormont Hotel on 15 November. It will be a night not to be missed, with lots of dancing and entertainment as well as a raffle – with all funds raised coming to Parkinson’s UK.
