Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting office hardware as a gateway into company security systems, according to Burkes, one of Northern Ireland’s largest independent vendors for print, document, data and communication technologies.   Burke Systems & Solutions issued the warning at a business event in the Grand Central Hotel where they informed companies that they are vulnerable to attack because of compromised hardware if printers and other devices are internet enabled.

As printers are connected to most companies’ IT network, important documents containing sensitive information, including tax forms, financial statements, medical information and employee data are susceptible to cyber-attacks unless printers are properly protected.

Figures from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport found that four in ten businesses in the UK (43%) experienced a cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This figure rises to more than two thirds for large businesses, 72% of which identified a breach or attack.

The event was held to mark Burke Systems & Solutions’ exclusive premier partnership with world-leading brand HP. Burkes have been appointed as an accredited print partner with HP following its recent acquisition of Samsung print. HP Printers are the world’s most secure printing systems, only HP printers have inbuilt technology to stop an attack the moment it begins.

Burkes will be the exclusive printing vendor for HP Printers in Northern Ireland, providing the company with a platform to increase market presence within Ireland and GB. The business is now able to offer a fully comprehensive package of hardware and solutions to support organizations of all sizes with their digital transformation and automation of document workflow.

Burkes expects to grow their team with three new staff in the coming months to meet the increased demand of services since their appointment as a HP premier print partner.

Michael Burke, Managing Director at Burke Systems & Solutions, said: “By 2020, 95% of electronic devices will have IoT (Internet of Things) enabled, many NI companies may not realise that they are vulnerable. We offer a print hardware review to help identify the risks and costs of unprotected printing.

“Our Premium Partnership with HP Print has been invaluable to our business, we’ve seen a 20% increase in market share since last November. The technology HP Printers harness to safeguard data is the most secure in the world, it is an assurance to our customers that we can provide the best protection possible to ensure their information is secure.”

He added: “Burkes have continued to evolve over the past 42 years improving our skills and knowledge alongside advancements in technology in order to offer intelligent solutions for our clients. Since my father started this business in 1976, we’ve always placed customer service at the centre of what we do. We’re proud and passionate about delivering that same trustworthy customer service alongside world-class expertise. Our recent investment in a training suite at our offices in the Gasworks, together with the appointment of our pre-sales solutions architect, enables us to offer an enhanced service to our customers.”
