With Philanthropy Fortnight well underway, three NI charities have received a funding boost at a unique Community Foundation crowdfunding event which highlighted the hard-hitting issues of suicide, human trafficking and LGBT mental health.  The #CharityChampions event which was sponsored by Investec Wealth & Investment and hosted by Pamela Ballantine, saw over £10,000 raised in addition to pledges of time and talent within 30 minutes at Belfast Harbour Commissioners for PIPS Charity, Flourish NI and The Rainbow Project, with donations still coming in.

Speaking about the event, Siofra Healy Director of Philanthropy at the Community Foundation said: “Northern Ireland is well known for being one of the most generous regions in the UK when it comes to supporting charities, and the Foundation is delighted with the fantastic response we received at our #CharityChampions event.

“With 80% of funding and support available in Northern Ireland going to 20% of charities here, the Community Foundation is keen to help make connections between local groups who are doing invaluable work on a range of key causes, with the people who care about those issues.

“Philanthropy Fortnight as a celebration of local generosity has provided the perfect opportunity for us to hold this event to encourage philanthropic giving to lesser known or smaller community groups in Northern Ireland,” said Siofra.

Commenting on the pitches made by the charities Siofra added: “PIPS Charity spoke of their work in suicide prevention and detailed how they have supported people of all ages – with the youngest person being six years old and the eldest aged 89. Flourish NI talked about the harrowing experiences of people who have been trafficked into NI for both economic and sexual exploitation, whilst the Rainbow Project outlined the challenges and prejudices which members of the LGBT community face on a daily basis,”

Siofra continued: “All three charities made incredibly compelling and moving presentations which clearly had an impact on the people who attended. We are incredibly grateful on behalf of all three charities that people supported them so generously on the night,” said Siofra.

To encourage generosity,  the Community Foundation matched funded donations on the evening and has set up a JustGiving page for anyone who would like to be a #CharityChampion and add their support to PIPS Charity, Flourish NI and The Rainbow Project at: www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/cfni/charity-champions
